Music & Lyrics by Tommy Newman and Book by Gordon Greenberg
Jane Austen meets Helen Gurley Brown in a new musical that celebrates love - and the joys of living on your own terms.
In the stylish world of 1964 Manhattan, beloved newspaper columnist Emma Woodhouse is about to turn 30, and she’s still single. As her father urges her to marry the first available man – and her editor urges her to toe the line, she transforms her household advice column into a platform for change, encouraging readers to drop their casseroles, question the nature of marriage and demand sexual freedom.
In an inspired move, Emma recruits her first ‘Single Girl’ – a dental hygienist from Rhode Island - and vows to overhaul her life. This sets into motion a chain of events that lands Emma in a new job working for suave but secretive tobacco king TR Elton - and culminates in hilarious calamity at Truman Capote’s legendary Black and White Ball. Emma ends up learning, along with her protégé, that ‘when it’s right, it’s never perfect.
Filled with the buoyant sounds and bright spirit of the mid-1960s, The Single Girls Guide is a fizzy riff on Sex and The Single Girl that echoes the questions we continue to ask about marriage, sex and being single.
